On January 5, 2006, Jean Townsend passed away in Sharbot Lake, Ontario. "I am fascinated by the many ways to use distortion, colour, and texture to better express a given theme, and to use abstract expressions in my backgrounds to heighten the mood or tempo of that theme. During the fifties, when the late Pearl McCarthy referred to me as a Symbolic Expressionist I was dubious about the designation. Now, as I look back over the years, I accept it as valid."
